The competition is sponsored by the Library of Congress in conjunction with public libraries in the Mid-Atlantic region (Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia). To participate, kids must write a one-page essay about one book, either fiction or nonfiction, that has had an impact on their lives. An entry form must be submitted along with the essay, in person, at participating libraries by August 12, 2013. More than 270 public libraries are registered to participate. Awards will be presented to five finalists and one winner per state, and to three overall grand-prize winners. The recipients will be honored at the Library of Congress National Book Festival in September on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
